You, Not Your Brother – Embracing Your Unique Calling

Philippians 4:13
I can do all this through him who gives me strength

Not me Lord, call someone else! That was Moses’ response when God called him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt.

God does call His people from time to time, to tasks small and big, according to His divine purposes. Amazing and all-sufficient though our God be, God in His graciousness chooses to use us, weak and sinful though we are, to accomplish His kingdom purposes.

Moses is one of the many that God called over the centuries. The task that God called Moses to, was huge and staggering. But the fact is, God when He called, also provided all that Moses needed for the task at hand. Also when Moses had questions, and understandably so, God talked him through them.

In that conversation between the Lord and Moses, at that burning bush, God establishes some guidelines of the hows and whys of being called by God for a task. There are three very clear principles that are being established here. When God calls,

Your Qualification for the task at hand is not what you can do or not, what your many degrees are, etc. Your qualification is in the fact of who is calling! The fact is that it is the Lord God Almighty, Lord of the entire universe, the God who has made every cell in your body, the only One who knows the end from the beginning, it is He who is calling you!

Your Confidence and assurance are the fact that the One who calls you will never send you where He does not come with you. In Exodus 3:12, the Lord said to Moses, I will surely be with you, and this shall be the sign to you that I have sent you.  What an assurance and confidence for a child of God, what more can you ask for? Romans 8:31 says if God is for us, who can ever be against us?

Your Direction: Moses seemed to have an unending tirade of questions that came tumbling one over the other, the Lord patiently, works through each one. In Exodus 4:12, The Lord promises to be Moses’ guide and teacher, directing his every step along the way. Isaiah 30:21 says ‘and your ears will hear a word behind you, saying, this is the way, walk in it, when you turn to the right hand and when you turn to the left.’

Just as the Lord called Moses, the Lord continues to call His children today. It is indeed our privilege to be used by God and NOT the other way around. For the Bible says, if we don’t praise Him, the stones will cry out (Luke 19:40).

The fact however is, God called Moses not Aaron. God is calling you, not your brother or sister or spouse or friend or anyone else. And no one else can do that which you are called to do, in His kingdom. Each of us is unique and has our own part to play.

Would you prayerfully say, ‘Yes Lord’ to whatever He might be calling you to do today?

Heavenly Father, for the many excuses and fears that have kept me from answering your call, I am sorry. Today I submit myself at your feet and humbly say, Yes Lord, whatever you ask me to do, I will do, by your grace.

  1. Do you find yourself making excuses or doubting your qualifications when faced with a God-given opportunity or calling? What are some of the excuses or doubts you’ve encountered?
  2. How do you view your qualifications and abilities in relation to your calling from God? Do you tend to rely more on your own strengths, or do you trust in God’s provision and guidance?
  3. How does the assurance of God’s presence and support impact your willingness to respond to His call?
