Beyond the Questions

“Woe to those who quarrel with their Maker, those who are nothing but potsherds among the potsherds on the ground. Does the clay say to the potter, ‘What are you making?’ Does your work say, ‘The potter has no hands’? Isaiah 45:9

Israel’s deliverance is coming but from unexpected sources.

This chapter begins with the Lord addressing Cyrus as his anointed. The Lord says that he will take Cyrus by the hand to subdue nations and strip kings of their armour. And this form of deliverance was most unexpected and even unacceptable to some of the exiles.

It is to those exiles who resented deliverance through a foreign conqueror, that these verses (v9-13) are addressed. They are likened to a clay pot scolding the potter for his design. A woe is pronounced on such a person, who would “quarrel with his Maker.”

There are many events around us that cause us to wonder at God’s ways. Natural disasters, the rise of oppressive governments, deprivation among those who are hardworking, suffering from sickness, the difficult people or situations in our lives, the list seems long.

And we don’t understand. We have questions. And that is okay. But when we come to Him with our questions, we are to come with a humble spirit, not as one who quarrels with his Maker.

God’s Word says when we don’t understand, we humbly submit to the One we trust. We trust our just God, who will ensure righteousness and salvation will prevail on earth and in His people’s lives. We trust in the sovereignty of our loving Father who holds our future.

Who needs to be encouraged by your humble trust in the Lord, today?

Lord, help me trust you more, especially when I don’t understand, I pray.
