And He said, I will certainly return to you according to the time of life, and behold, Sarah your wife shall have a son.

Genesis 18:10

Our God, the Keeper of Promises

The Lord had just spoken to Abraham in a significant meeting where He changed their names and promised them a son, that Abraham would become exceedingly fruitful. The Lord established the covenant of circumcision and the promise of Canaan land. And now the Lord visits Abraham in person, to reiterate His promise of a son. He dramatically repeated this promise to Abraham in a relatively short time (previously in Genesis 17:17-22).

Our God is a God of promises. He is faithful and keeps His every promise. And if you believe in Christ, you are Abraham’s offspring, an heir of all God’s promises (Galatians 3:7, 29), for all the promises of God find their Yes in Him (2 Corinthians 1:20).

Like Abraham, we need to hear God’s promises over and over again. It is a way God uses to encourage and develop our faith: The Bible says, so then faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God (Romans 10:17). That brings us to the question of what is keeping you from believing the faithful One and His promises, from trusting Him? Are you hearing Him and His Word often enough? If not, why? How can you cultivate a mindset of daily trust and dependence on God’s promises?

Prayer

Lord, help me believe and live each day by your faithful promises.
