My hand will be against the prophets who see false visions and utter lying divinations. They will not belong to the council of my people or be listed in the records of Israel, nor will they enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the Sovereign Lord. – Ezekiel 13:9
False prophets often have seemingly optimistic, positive messages. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE
Among the Jewish people of Ezekiel’s time, there were many false prophets, both in Israel and in the Babylonian exile. These false prophets of Israel prophesied that God will deliver Jerusalem and Judah from the Babylonians, and those already in exile will come home soon. Though this was soothing to the ears of the suffering people, these prophecies were not true or from God.
The prophecies of these false prophets came from their own hearts and desires and sounded spiritual and mysterious. But God called them foolish prophets who had seen nothing (v3) and who spoke lies (v6).
And God said, His hand will be in judgment upon these false prophets; they had no share in Israel’s assembly, in Israel’s house, or in Israel’s land. This exclusion would declare that Yahweh is God. These three punishments strike the core of what it meant to be an Israelite.
False prophets are very much part of today’s church. 2 Peter 2:1 says, false teachers are not a possibility, but a reality and right within the church. False teachers do not get their message from God.
The message of a true teacher leads one to be effective and productive in the knowledge of Christ (2 Peter 1:8). Would you ask God to keep you alert to false teachers and prophets?
Lord, help me know and accept only your Truth, I pray.
