The River of Life (Ezekiel 47:1-12) KNOW GOD

Published on Sep 12, 2025

The man brought me back to the entrance to the temple, and I saw water coming out from under the threshold of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced east). The water was coming down from under the south side of the temple, south of the altar. – Ezekiel 47:1

Waters in the sanctuary. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE

The first twelve verses of this chapter talk of Ezekiel’s vision of the holy water, their rise, extent, depth. It also tells about the healing property of these waters and gives an account of the trees growing on its banks.

The waters of the sanctuary are running waters, like a river, not standing waters as in a pond. The waters were increasing and spreading. As Ezekiel watched, the waters grew from just a trickle to a mighty river (v3-5).

This parable gives a picture of the River of Life. Throughout the Scriptures, water is associated with the Holy Spirit. And here we see the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and is associated with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the church on the day of Pentecost.

And since Pentecost, the gospel has been spreading and it continues to spread even today. Through the witness of His people, the Gospel continues to spread to the ends of the earth. We see the work of the Holy Spirit moving in our own hearts and churches bringing with it blessings, healing and growth. It is the River of Life that flows from the temple and the Spirit of God. And the ultimate fulfillment of this passage will come when Christ returns to reign on the earth.

What difference has this River of Life made in your life?

Spirit of the Living God, fall afresh on me, break me, fill me and use me, I pray.
