When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. – Psalm 56:3
David is in trouble, deep trouble. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE
David was alone, desperate and afraid.
King David wrote this psalm when he had been captured by the Philistines in Gath (1 Samuel 21:10-15). He was in great and constant danger from many enemies – the Philistines and Saul’s men. David was greatly outnumbered. The young man who killed the lion and the bear, the one who killed Goliath and was a successful young captain in Israel’s army, was afraid.
Fear, the unpleasant emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain or harm, is very real. Every one of us experiences fear. From fear of heights or spiders, to fear of people, situations, the future, or of pain, fear is something every one of us can identify with. How do you respond to your fears?
In the face of fear and overwhelming circumstances, David does couple of things. He pours out his heart to God (v1-2) expressing his troubles. He called on the character of God and His mercy. And then he also has a chosen response – he boldly proclaimed his trust in God.
David was afraid but he did not let it overwhelm him. He feared, but that fear did not fill the whole area of his mind, for he adds, I will trust in Thee. ‘It is possible, then, for fear and faith to occupy the mind at the same moment.’ (Spurgeon). David focuses on the God he knew personally, who he knew to be more than able to take him through his challenges
There are times when we are so consumed by fear that we feel paralyzed and so do not act. But David’s counsel would be, ‘I am afraid – but I trust in God to do what is right’
Don’t wait for the fear to stop, before you do what is right before the Lord. Trust Him now!
Lord when I am afraid, help me trust in you, I pray.
Psalm 56, 120, 140-142
