But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go, I will go, and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. – Ruth 1:16

When the famine  worsened, Elimelech moved to Moab, with his wife Naomi and sons, Mahlon and Kilion. The sons married Moabite women Ruth and Orpah. But over time, Elimelech and his two sons died, leaving Naomi, Ruth, and Orpah as widows.

Naomi heard that the famine was over in Bethlehem and decided to return. However, she encouraged her daughters-in-law to return to their homes in Moab. After much coaxing, Orpah agreed. But Ruth did not.

Ruth was a Moabite. She grew up worshipping pagan gods. She did not know the God of her Israelite husband, Mahlon. Over the years of her marriage, however, Ruth must have heard about the spectacular hand of Yahweh in delivering the Israelites from Egypt. Also, how the God of the Israelites had parted the waters of the Red Sea to deliver them from the hands of Pharaoh and his pursuing army. How He had led, kept and provided for His people through the forty years in the desert, and much more.

And for Ruth, these did not remain just stories. Hearing about this amazing God of the Israelites, led her to believe in Him. When the time to make a life-changing choice came, she was clear and ready. She chose to follow this God.

This same God is alive today and continues to faithfully deliver and provide for His people. The question is, have you chosen to follow this God?

Lord, help me choose you today and every day of my life, I pray.

Beyond Ourselves (Psalm 102:1-28) LOVE

The poorest, the most difficult person, the most ignorant convert, every single one is precious to the Lord and so is to be precious to the church of God.
