Proverbs is a collection of practical life wisdom, given mostly in short, memorable statements. King Solomon, with others like Lemuel and Agur together have authored these proverbs. These first few verses of the book state its purpose.

One of the primary goals of this book is to gain wisdom. While knowledge is the collection of facts; wisdom is the right use of what we know for daily living. The book of Proverbs is also meant to instruct, to give guidance. These instructions equip one for daily living.

Proverbs is also meant to give prudence to the simple. The simple is one who is uneducated and needs instruction. The simple is easily gullible and believes every word, while the prudent considers well his steps (Proverbs 14:15). Proverbs will give the young person knowledge and discretion.

Wisdom is much needed in the world we live in. Warren Wiersbe has rightly said, “We’re living in the ‘information age,’ but we certainly aren’t living in the ‘age of wisdom.’ Many people who are wizards with their computers seem to be amateurs when it comes to making a success out of their lives.”

Billy Graham, the great evangelist and one of the most influential Christian leaders of the twentieth century is known to have read a chapter of Proverbs every day. He believed “the Psalms tells us how to get along with God. The Proverbs tells us how to get along with our fellow man.”

What will you do differently to choose this wisdom each day?

Help me Lord to grow in your wisdom each day, I pray.
