His name was Nabal and his wife’s name was Abigail. She was an intelligent and beautiful woman, but her husband was surly and mean in his dealings—he was a Calebite. – 1 Samuel 25:3

As Nabal’s wife, Abigail, had a choice to make that day and quick.

The servant had just come and given a very disturbing report about her husband, Nabal’s response to David.

Sheep shearing was a time of festivity and celebration. And Nabal was in great spirits. When David heard that Nabal was shearing his sheep, he sent his men to him, asking for compensation for the protection that he and his men had given his shepherds. David politely reminded Nabal of the traditions of generosity that surrounded sheep shearing and counted on Nabal’s generosity. But Nabal gave a foolish and arrogant reply. He refused to give David anything and went to the extent of asking who David was.  David was furious and set out to kill Nabal and his household.

Abigail acted quickly. She loaded her donkeys with food for the men and rushed to meet David. She met him on the way, fell at David’s feet and pleaded for favour. She accepted that Nabal was foolish in his response and asked for forgiveness. She was quick to remind David that he would be sinning greatly by choosing to avenge himself. David, impressed by her good judgement, stopped.

When Abigail returned to Nabal the next day, she reported to him all that happened, and his heart failed. He died ten days later. David later proposed to Abigail and took her as his wife.

What difficult situation needs your wise, humble response today?

Lord, give me a wise and a humble heart, I pray.
