Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores it’s provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest. – Proverbs 6:6-8
There is great value in hard work. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE
The Bible often points to nature to help us learn valuable lessons. Christ sends us to the school of the birds of the air, the lilies of the field, to learn to depend on God to provide for us (Matthew 6:25-29). In Jeremiah 8:7, we are pointed to the stork, the dove, and the thrush, to learn to take the seasons of grace and not to lose opportunities that God puts in our hands.
The difference between success and failure is often hard work. The ant is the proverbial insect of hard work. It is considered even more diligent than even the bee and careful of its young. And King Solomon, speaking to the sluggard or lazy person, says go take some lessons from that small insect, the ant.
The ant is wise and worthy of being imitated because she works hard without being told to work hard. She has no captain. No one who gives instructions or imposes work. The ethics of diligence comes from within.
The ant does not work hard because someone is watching. The ant works hard when the work is to be done, in summer and in the harvest. She works with forethought. She plans ahead.
Parents often find that their children need to be watched, monitored and even nagged sometimes to do the work they need to do. But as adults, each one is to take responsibility to do their work.
Where do you need to work harder without having to be monitored?
Lord, help me work hard and be diligent, I pray.
