The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit. – Proverbs 15:4
How many people have you murdered in the past week? | WATCH ON YOUTUBE
That would be a ridiculous question to ask decent law-abiding citizens, right? Yet, if the question is when was the last time you were angry with someone or the last time you expressed yourself in sharp, cutting words, would it seem as ridiculous?
We all get angry, and quite often too. And in our anger, we end up saying things that are sharp and painful. The Bible is very clear about anger and does not take it lightly. In Matthew 5:21-22, the Lord Jesus says, anyone who is angry with his brother or sister, will be subject to judgment. And anyone who says, ‘you fool’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.
Our words matter. We are called to use our words with caution. Proverbs 18:21 says that the tongue has the power of life and death. Words have a lot of power. Words once spoken cannot be taken back. Children who have been told ‘you will never amount to anything’ or ‘you are useless’ or ‘you are a failure’ often have grown up and lived it out.
The Bible says the words we speak have immense power. The power to give life or crush the spirit. Words have the power to encourage, give life or break the spirit of a person. Good words are like a tree that continually brings life from its shade and fruit.
So, the next time you are furious and are about to lash out, would you pause and ask God for grace to bless instead.
Lord, help me be one who blesses with my words, I pray.
