Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure and have washed my hands in innocence. – Psalm 73:13
Asaph is frustrated and perplexed. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE
Asaph was one of the greatest singers and musicians during the time of David and Solomon. He begins the psalm with a strong declaration of a truth that he was confident about, ‘Surely God is good to Israel.’ Yet another truth troubled him and almost caused him to stumble. He says for I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked (v3).
As he looks around Asaph sees that the wicked seemed to have no struggles in life; they are arrogant and wear pride like a necklace (v6). They are violent and malicious people and seem to get away with all evil.
On the other hand, Asaph was ridden with troubles all day long and new punishments every morning (v14). He was frustrated and felt he had been faithful and pure for nothing. He could not understand how a good God was allowing the wicked to prosper while the godly seemed to only have suffering and punishments.
That was until he went into the sanctuary of God and into God’s presence. It is there he gets a perspective of eternity. He gains understanding and gets the larger picture.
Getting the right perspective of God and gaining understanding makes all the difference in our lives and to the questions that plague us too.
Do you go into God’s presence regularly, to gain understanding?
Lord, help me regularly come into your sanctuary that I may live with the right perspective, I pray.
