So David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go and attack the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hands?” The Lord answered him, “Go, for I will surely deliver the Philistines into your hands.” – 2 Samuel 5:19
David was a veteran soldier. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE
David had been anointed as king over Israel. And David had a much-needed perspective. He recognized that it was the Lord who had established him as king over Israel and had exalted his kingdom for the sake of his people Israel (v12). And that kept him humble and dependent on God.
As David was settling down as king, he heard the news that the Philistines had arrived in the Valley of Rephaim. He could easily have gone right out and attacked and routed them. After all, he was a great warrior and he knew the Philistines and their army well. He had even been on their side to fight on their behalf. He sure knew how to attack them. So, what was the delay?
David did not go out against them immediately. He went to the Lord to seek counsel. And the Lord assured him that He will deliver them into David’s hands.
God allows us wealth and positions of power, not just for us, but for the sake of His people, for us to be a blessing to others. David knew that all he had was from the Lord and for the Lord. He chose to call on Him. He depended on God and not on his own knowledge or abilities.
On whom or what do you depend each day for wisdom and counsel?
Lord, help me humbly depend on you every day, I pray.
