Our fathers in Egypt did not understand nor appreciate Your miracles; They did not remember the abundance of Your mercies nor imprint Your loving kindnesses on their hearts, but they were rebellious at the sea, at the Red Sea. – Psalm 106:7
Memories often define our attitudes. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE
The psalmist is burdened by the forgetfulness of the people. In the above verse, he is confessing the sin of the entire Israelite nation. They were rebellious. They did not understand or appreciate the miracles that the Lord had done on their behalf. Miracles to rescue, to take care and provide for them. Neither did they remember the abundant mercies of the Lord. They did not imprint the loving-kindness of the Lord on their hearts. And the fact that they did not remember, was rebellion!
Rebellion was one of the dark sins of the Israelites. They rebelled by being disobedient, worshipping idols and being proud. Their rebellion was also evident by the fact that they did not remember. They did not remember God’s goodness and faithfulness to them. And when they did not remember they were not grateful. And ungratefulness comes from a heart of pride and self-sufficiency.
Human minds are rather peculiar. We often tend to remember the bad things that have happened in our lives rather than the good. We are quick to complain when things don’t go the way we would like. Rarely do we remember the many wonderful things that we have enjoyed.
Take a moment to pause and look back over your life and observe what you remember. Are you being rebellious?
Gracious Lord as I look back, I realize I have been quick to complain, but slow to remember your goodness to me. Give me an increasingly grateful heart, I pray.
