Stand up in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God. I am the Lord.
Leviticus 19:32

Standing up, is it that important? | WATCH ON YOUTUBE

The Lord is instructing His people regarding daily living and how to interact within a community. And one of the things He says, is to stand up in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly.

Interestingly the sentence does not end there. When we respect the elderly and stand up in their presence, we are respecting them, but more importantly, we are revering God. A worshipper of God, someone who loves and honors God, is to respect the elderly. Also, at no place does the Bible say, respect the elderly who are good people or those who have been good to you. We are called to respect the elderly, period. No clauses or options.

Isaac showed respect to Abraham, Jacob to his parents, Joseph to his aged father, Ruth to her mother-in-law, and the list goes on. Christ is the ultimate example of tender care toward His mother even during His dying moments.

We respect the elderly for the rich and, sometimes, tough experiences they have come through. We respect them for the long years they have invested in serving us. We respect them for their maturity and wisdom. We respect them because they remind us of the nearness of eternity and the imminent brevity of life. We respect our elders as we set an example and legacy for our children.

Who have you been disrespectful to? Would you ask God to forgive you and help you find creative ways to respect them always?

Lord, help me respect the elderly in my life, by my words and actions, I pray.
