Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. – Joshua 1:8
Joshua, with the people of Israel, is standing at the threshold of the Promised Land. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE
Joshua is one of the two people (Caleb, was the other) that survived the desert journey. All the others of his generation are dead because they rebelled against the Lord, by not believing that the Lord could take them into the Promised land. Joshua is also one of the few that has seen, at close hand, the challenges that Moses faced while leading these people. And now Moses is dead, and he is to take over this staggering task. Joshua is scared and overwhelmed.
The Lord speaks to Joshua, commissions him to the task at hand. “Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged” is the repeated message and encouragement that the Lord gives him in this first chapter. The Lord also tells him to meditate on His Word, day in and day out, night and day. Does that mean you only read the Bible all day? No! But it does mean that you reflect on the Word all day and be governed by the Word, in all you do and say. Obey and live by the Word.
Every one of us has fears. We are worried about situations in our life, fearful about what the future holds. And the Lord is saying to you, be strong and courageous for He is with you, He will never leave you nor forsake you. Meditate on His Word, draw strength from Him.
Lord, help me know and live by your Word, all day, every day, I pray.
