The Right Recognition (Job 35:1-16) QUESTIONS

Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me.  Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. – Job 38:3-4

God rebukes Job.

As we go through the book of Job, there could be many possible questions that come up in our minds. Questions about why God allowed righteous and innocent Job to suffer so much. Even questions about Job being the helpless object of a contest between God and Satan. It is fine to ask questions and try to understand them. But we need to guard against drawing improper conclusions that contradict the perfect character and ways of God that are clearly taught in the Bible.

In the above passage, God seems to be asking Job a series of tough questions. There is no indication of God sympathizing with Job’s suffering and pain. It could seem like God is simply exerting His power to subdue Job and force him to submit to Him. That could lead to the feeling that God was unfair to Job. And yet we know that God’s response to the situation must have been wise because God is perfect in wisdom.

It is crucial not to harbor or entertain negative thoughts about God. The evil one is waiting to evoke and provoke such negative thoughts within us. God is open to reason and not One who will simply overwhelm and try to overcome us by the sheer weight of His power. If we submit simply because someone is powerful, then we could end up submitting to Satan because he is also a powerful being.

Job had enough recognition of God’s goodness and greatness. Do you?

Lord, guard my heart against Satan’s attacks to provoke wrong thinking about you, I pray.
