Part 1: All Heavens Declare

Advent: Who is He in Yonder Stall?

Psalm 19:1-3

The heavens declare the glory of God;
And the firmament shows His handiwork.
Day unto day utters speech,
And night unto night reveals knowledge.
There is no speech nor language
Where their voice is not heard.

David opens this wonderful psalm with a powerful declaration, expressing his awe and wonder at the beauty of creation, and the One who created it all. He says the heavens declare the glory of the Lord and the firmament shows His handiwork. Ever wonder how that happens?

When we look at a piece of art or read some great work, we catch a glimpse of the artist or writer. If we have children, we are most often able to guess which one of them created which drawing. What we create is bound to represent us. So also, when we see the natural world around we catch glimpses of our Creator in His creation. God is the Creator of all things – the sky, the seas, all creatures, plants, and human beings. Job when inspired by the Holy Spirt had this to say about the beasts and the fish, Job 12:7-10:

“But now ask the beasts, and they will teach you;

And the birds of the air, and they will tell you;

8 Or speak to the earth, and it will teach you;

And the fish of the sea will explain to you.

9 Who among all these does not know

That the hand of the Lord has done this,

10 In whose hand is the life of every living thing,

And the breath of all mankind?

The truth clearly is that our God is the Creator of all the universe. He reveals Himself to us, day in and day out, through the beauty, splendor, and the perfect balance of His creation. The question however is, what is your response and mine, to this awesome God and His marvelous creation? A yawn of boredom? Have we become complacent and are taking God’s creation and its beauty for granted? Or do our hearts thrill in worship when we see God’s majesty in His creation?

Lord may I never lose the wonder and awe of the beauty of your creation, I pray.

Those who are grateful for mercy, are merciful. The bottomless well of mercy extended, should motivate and compel one to pass on the blessing.
