Read: Matthew 21:23-46
Jesus said to them, Have you never read in the Scriptures: ˜The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes?
Matthew 21:42
Jesus the cornerstone.
Jesus is the Cornerstone of God’s great plan for the ages, that all things would be founded and fulfilled in Him.
Jesus quotes this passage from Psalm 118:22-23, a prophetic statement, fulfilled in His work. The stone that the builders rejected was true of Jacob, Joseph, and David, each of whom was rejected and then raised high. It was most certainly true of Jesus. He was rejected on many an account. They did not approve of His origin (John 7:52), His lack of formal education (John 7:15), His disregard for religious traditions (Luke 6:2) nor His choice of friends (Matthew 9:11). But Jesus is the Cornerstone on which rests God’s amazing plan for the human race through the ages.
The capstone or cornerstone was an important stone, that held together two rows of stones or stabilized the stones at the foundation. Jesus is the Cornerstone of God’s Kingdom. “Now He is the bond of the building, holding Jew and Gentile in firm unity. This precious Cornerstone binds God and man together in wondrous amity, for he is both in one. He joins earth and heaven together, for he participates in each. He joins time and eternity together, for he was a man of few years, and yet he is the Ancient of Days. Wondrous Cornerstone!”(Spurgeon).
Jesus exalted from the cross to the resurrection to the right hand of God on high, is the work of God alone. The psalmist expresses the joy and speaks on behalf of those redeemed, whose lives are built on this Cornerstone “This is the Lord’s doing and it is marvelous in our eyes.”
The religious leaders rejected Him, the Roman leaders crucified Him, the Jewish multitudes chose another, and the disciples cowered in fear. What is your response to Jesus the Cornerstone? Would you ask God to enable you to be among those redeemed, who are rejoicing in Christ the Cornerstone, among those who find it marvelous, despite the rejection of the builders?
Prayer
Lord, would You take away anything in me that rejects You and give me a heart that rejoices in You, the Cornerstone? Amen
