Come Away With Me: Embracing Time Alone with God

Mark 6:31-32
Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, He said to them, “Come with Me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place.

In the aftermath of the global challenges brought by the pandemic, social distancing has become a necessary norm. Social distancing is something we have learned to embrace for the health and safety of ourselves, our loved ones, and our communities. This new way of living may leave many of us feeling uneasy, yet, is it an entirely foreign concept?

The disciples were busy. They had just returned from intense preaching and healing ministry (Mark 6:13). They came back to persistent and demanding crowds seeking Jesus and the disciples. They were so busy they didn’t even have time to eat. Sounds familiar?

Jesus, in His wisdom, recognized the need for a pause, a time of retreat, for physical and spiritual renewal. He invites His disciples to ‘Come away with Me.’ This was more than just a physical separation; it was an opportunity to spend quality time with Him in solitude.

When the Lord walked this earth, He often took time alone, away from the crowds, even from His own disciples. He retreated from the noise and chaos of the world, to commune with His Father in prayer. If Jesus often needed time alone with the Father, how much more do we?

Jesus continues to extend the same invitation—to ‘Come Away with Me’ to turn our gaze away from life’s busyness and take time to be alone with Him. He calls us to distance ourselves from the cares and busyness of the world, to come and sit a while with Him.

In a world inundated with constant news updates and information overload, the Lord calls us to come away, to spend time alone with Him and His Word, and to seek Him in prayer. In moments when the world seems to make little sense, we are reminded to turn to the One who remains constant through all seasons. When fear and confusion attempt to grip our minds, He calls us to come away and reflect on His Word afresh. To tune our hearts to His still, small voice.

May we choose to come away from the cares and burdens of the world and choose to be with Jesus and His Word. As we spend time alone with Him and allow Him to still our hearts and minds with a peace that surpasses all understanding.

Lord help me choose to come away with you each day to listen to you each day

  • In practical terms, how can I heed Jesus’ invitation to “Come away with Me” in my current circumstances?
  • What adjustments can I make to my daily routine to ensure that intentional time with God becomes a consistent and cherished practice?
  • When fear and confusion fill my mind, what practical steps can I take to fix my eyes on Him?
