2 Corinthians 10: 5 – casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.
Paul is addressing the carnal ways among the Corinthian people.
Christians have been bought with the blood of Christ and so belong to Him. We are to love and serve Christ and live in obedience to Him and so glorify God in our bodies (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) which includes our thoughts.
Paul calls the Corinthian Christians to pull down strongholds of wrong thinking and perceptions which are contrary to the true knowledge and nature of God. When we begin to think in ways contrary to God and His truth, we are to be intentional to stop such thoughts, take dominion over them in Jesus’ name, and not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of the minds (Romans 12:2)
We are not helpless victims of our thoughts. Just as we cannot stop birds from flying over our heads but we can sure stop them from building a nest on our heads, so also, though we may not always be able to control wrong thoughts that come our way, we sure can ensure they don’t become strongholds in our lives. We can fight the battle against thoughts of lust, anger, greed, bitterness, or worry with the spiritual weapons of faith, righteousness, and the Word of God. Enabled by the Holy Spirit you and I can indeed bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.
