Read: Exodus 31-33
Then the Lord said, “There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by.
Exodus 33:21-22
God shelters and protects us in the cleft of the rock.
Moses desired to see God’s glory (Exodus 33:18) and God agreed to reveal His goodness. He gives Moses a specific place to stand, in the cleft of the rock, and says He will cover him with His hand as He passes by. What a wonderful picture of God, who tenderly protects and shelters.
Moses’ request was bold and brave. He already saw some of the glory of God (Exodus 16:10, 24:16-17). Yet he wanted more. God was pleased with Moses and his longing to know Him in greater and deeper ways. God promised to show Moses His goodness. God is entirely good and His glory lies in His goodness. God also promised to proclaim the name of the Lord before him. In ancient cultures, the name represented a person’s character and nature. God promised to reveal more than just a name, He would reveal His character to Moses.
Moses’ hunger for God
This hunger for more of God, for more of an experience with God, is a mark of true revival and restoration of a relationship. Whatever Moses had experienced with God, he now wanted more. “The more a man knows of God, the more desirous he is to know Him.” (Trapp)
Moses’ prayer and longing was for God to show his glory, to take him a step closer. Is that your prayer too? Would you ask God to reveal Himself to you? He is a wonderful Savior who promises to hide your soul in the cleft of the rock and cover you there with His hand.
Prayer
Lord, please increase in me the desire and longing to know you more and more each day, Amen
