In the whirlwind of daily decisions—big and small—it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, confused, or impulsive. Modern life often urges us to act quickly, to respond before we reflect. Yet Scripture reminds us that the way we begin matters deeply. Our starting point shapes not only our decisions, but also the peace—or unrest—we carry along the way.
Solomon, known for his God-given wisdom, offers this foundational truth: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding” (Proverbs 9:10, NKJV). This fear is not a cowering dread, but a reverent awe—an honoring of God for who He is: holy, sovereign, just, and Creator of all. Wisdom does not begin with information or experience; it begins with rightly recognizing God.
When reverence marks the beginning, our hearts align with God’s perspective. We acknowledge that He sees what we cannot and knows what we do not. This is why Scripture consistently links wisdom with the fear of the Lord. To disregard God—to act independently of Him—is to fall short of true wisdom, no matter how capable or confident we may feel.
The familiar truth “well begun is half done” takes on deeper meaning when our beginning is shaped by reverence for God. Such a beginning steadies the path ahead. Decisions rooted in awe of God arise not from urgency or pressure, but from quiet trust.
As we begin with reverence, confusion lessens because we stop relying solely on our own understanding. Anxiety softens as we surrender control to God’s sovereignty. Impulsiveness gives way to discernment as we pause to listen, reflect, and seek His will. Reverence creates space for wisdom to grow—wisdom that honors God and brings quiet peace within.
Pause and Ponder
- What does it look like for me to begin decisions with reverence for God?
- What shifts in my heart when I pause to invite God’s wisdom before acting?
- How might a reverent beginning change my experience of anxiety, confusion, or impulsiveness?
When our first steps are taken in the fear of the Lord, we place ourselves securely in His hands. God invites us to begin with Him—to trust that His wisdom leads not only to clarity, but to calm. A reverent heart keeps us steady, softened, and unshaken as we walk the path He sets before us.

Lord, help me set aside confusion and anxiety, and choose to begin every decision with reverence and trust in You. Amen.
