Life today rarely slows long enough for us to notice what is shaping our inner posture. We move from one responsibility to another—making decisions, forming opinions, and responding to demands—often on autopilot. In this constant rhythm, reverence can quietly give way to urgency, and awe can be replaced by efficiency. When that happens, the soul may feel restless or strained, not always because circumstances are difficult, but because something essential has shifted within. A heart that loses reverence also loses its anchor, and with it, a sense of calm and steadiness.
Samuel’s life offers a gentle but powerful picture of reverence for God. As a young boy serving in the temple, Samuel learned to listen for God’s voice in a time when Scripture tells us, “the word of the LORD was rare” (1 Samuel 3:1, NKJV). When God called his name, Samuel did not assume, rush, or speak on his own terms. Guided by Eli’s wise counsel, his response was simple and humble: “Speak, for Your servant hears” (1 Samuel 3:10, NKJV). These words reveal a heart anchored in awe and readiness to obey. Samuel positioned himself not as one in control, but as a servant attentive to God.
Even in his youth, Samuel approached God with seriousness and respect. He understood that hearing God’s word carried weight and responsibility. When the message God entrusted to him was difficult, Samuel did not avoid it or soften it to make it easier. His reverence was expressed through faithfulness—listening carefully and responding honestly. In a season marked by spiritual decline and distraction, Samuel’s attentive heart set him apart. His life reminds us that reverence is not loud or dramatic. It is quiet, steady, and deeply rooted—a listening posture that remains unshaken by pressure, fear, or distraction.

God calls us to live with an undivided heart—a faith that informs every choice and anchors us in Him. When reverence forms our inner posture, we are steadied and softened. We become unshaken, ready to listen and to respond to the living God.
Lord, quiet my heart so I hear You and so that I live with reverence, responding to Your voice with humility. Amen.
