Walking by Faith: Own Your Promises

Genesis 13:17
Go, walk through the length and the breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you.

Abram trusted God and followed Him out of Ur.

The Lord had promised Abram that He would bless him and make him a great nation. The Lord prospered Abram so much that he had to choose to part ways with Lot for the land could not support their combined flock. Abram graciously allows Lot to choose the land he wants.

After Lot had separated from him, the Lord spoke to Abram. Interestingly, the Lord speaks to Abram only after Lot is out of the picture., after Abram had made the faith-based decision to allow Lot to choose, trusting God to keep His promise and provide.

The Lord needed to speak to Abram alone, for the promise God had made was to Abram, not to Lot, a promise to Abram when he was still in Ur. Now the Lord is expanding the scope of that promise. The Lord asks Abram, to look up and see, to look in every direction. And the Lord says, all the land Abram could see the Lord would give to him and his descendants, forever! God reminds Abram that even though he had been generous enough to grant some of the land to his nephew Lot, God still said the land belonged to Abram.

And now in today’s text, the Lord tells Abram something interesting. He tells Abram to walk through the length and breadth of the land. As a token of Abram accepting the land by faith, God wants Abram to explore the land of promise, to walk through it as if it were his, though he did not have a record of ownership of the land yet. Wonder why? God asked Abram to walk through the land, experience it, feel it, know it, and accept it by faith.

Similarly, God calls us to explore our land, His Word, and His rich promises to us in it. His Word is rich with exceedingly great and precious promises pertaining to life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3-4). We are to walk through this land, possessing it by faith. When God makes a promise, He calls us to own it. Believe it. Accept it.

What are some promises the Lord has given you? What displays that you are standing on the promises of God, trusting Him to fulfill them to you?

Father help me believe and live by the many promises you have given me in your Word.
