God calls us to be Holy
God is holy and calls us to be holy. Sin is any action or thought that is contrary to the character of God. The result of sin is death and hell.
God takes sin seriously – seriously enough to sacrifice His only begotten Son to destroy it. We need to take sin seriously as well. Sin absolutely needs to be kept out even if it means taking drastic measures and many a sacrifice. Sacrifices do not mean literal mutilation but rather call for a radical transformation of heart and actions. To keep from sin is not an option or matter of convenience but a battle. A battle and sacrifice that is any day better than facing the wrath of God’s judgment in eternity. Nothing is worth missing heaven over. Nothing is worth going to hell for. Nothing.
We often tend to set our standards by people around us, causing us to sometimes even feel self-righteous depending on whom we choose to compare with. But, if we compare ourselves to God’s standards (as we should), our response cannot be anything but one of repentance, when confronted with our sin and depravity (Isaiah 6:5). Isaiah felt undone, and rightly so when he saw the vision of God. Undone is not a bad place to be. God will never do anything with us till he has first of all undone us. (Spurgeon).
We could never meet God’s standards of holiness by our efforts or abilities but In Christ Alone. Would you ask God to help you see your sin as He does and not try to justify or explain it away? Would you ask Him to un-do whatever it takes – a habit, friendship, behavior pattern, to keep you from sin? To give you a holy aversion to things that grieve His heart?
