Where Can We Find Comfort in Troubled Times?

Read: Matthew 14:1-21

Jesus saw the huge crowd as he stepped from the boat, and he had compassion
on them and healed their sick.

Matthew 14:14

God cares and has compassion on you.

Jesus having just heard of the death of His cousin, John the Baptist, goes away to a deserted place by Himself. But He did not get time to Himself, the crowds followed Him. Jesus had come to find peace and quiet and loneliness; instead, he found a vast crowd eagerly demanding what he could give. He might so easily have resented them. What right had they to invade his privacy with their continual demands? (Barclay). But Jesus had compassion. His compassion was great.

God desire to comfort

Jesus was moved with compassion. The original word is very expressive; his whole being was stirred to its lowest depth, and therefore he proceeded at once to work miracles of mercy among them. (Spurgeon). His compassion for the multitudes moved Him to heal the sick and teach them all the way until evening (Mark 6:34). Compassion is to have sympathetic concern for the suffering or misfortune of others.

Our God is a God of compassion, He cares deeply and is concerned for you and me. However, in times of difficulty and hardship we may find it difficult to remember this. Would you ask God to help you recognize His compassion for you? All of us go through days when we feel drained and overwhelmed, causing us to resent those we are called to serve. Would you ask Jesus to help you show compassion instead?

Our God is a God not just of second chances, but many chances. Getting right with God after a time of rebellion must always begin and center on God’s word. In those moments when we feel broken, lost, or burdened by guilt, it is through the Word that we find hope and healing. It is in the promises and teachings of Scripture that we encounter the very heart of God, who longs to restore and renew us.

God’s jealousy is love in action. He refuses to share the human heart with any rival, not because He is selfish, but because He knows that our very moral life depends on our loyalty to Him.
