Acts 21:35-36 – When he reached the stairs, he had to be carried by the soldiers because of the violence of the mob. For the multitude of the people followed after, crying out, “Away with him!”
Paul has been traveling from city to city, enduring extremely difficult weather and circumstances to share the gospel among the Gentiles. His passion and love for the Lord and for people have led him on three of his now famous missionary journeys. He has now arrived in Jerusalem, beginning what would be his fourth and final journey. Prior to this, Paul was strongly warned that imprisonment and trial awaited him in Jerusalem (Acts 21:13). Yet here he is, only to hear the crowds—his own people, the Jews—calling for his death.
Despite all the opposition, Paul remains unwavering in his commitment to the Gospel. His encounter with the risen Christ changed his entire perspective on life. Now, for him, “to live is Christ and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21). His one and only aim was Christ. If he lived, he would live to serve Christ and advance His Gospel. If he died, he would enter into the presence of his precious Lord that much sooner.
For Paul, who had walked many years with his Lord, it didn’t matter either way. His experiences, though painful, were no longer his focus. Instead, he was dedicated to using every opportunity, whether as a free man or a prisoner, to advance the Gospel.
What drives you each day? When faced with challenges, betrayals, or painful experiences, do you find yourself focused on the pain? Or will you choose to focus on Christ and His purpose for your life?
