Ruth 3:1-2A – One day Ruth’s mother-in-law Naomi said to her, “My daughter, I must find a home for you, where you will be well provided for. Now Boaz, with whose women you have worked, is a relative of ours
Having returned to Bethlehem with Naomi, Ruth soon enough gets down to working hard to provide for both of them. It was the season of barley harvest. With Naomi’s guidance, she begins to glean in the fields of Boaz, who was a relative or kinsman, as in some other translations.
A kinsman or kinsman-redeemer in ancient Israel, was more than a relative. He was a special family representative and had a specifically defined role in the family. He was responsible to safeguard, redeem the persons, the property and posterity of the family.
Naomi guides Ruth to get Boaz to take up his role as the kinsman-redeemer of Elimelech’s family. Soon enough Ruth and Boaz are married. They have a son, Obed, who was the grandfather of David. And David had a descendant named Jesus.
Ruth and Boaz are the reason why Jesus was born in Bethlehem! Boaz, the kinsman-redeemer, was a picture of Jesus our true Kinsman-Redeemer. Jesus our Kinsman-Redeemer, redeemed us from slavery to sin and death. Jesus our Kinsman-Redeemer was motivated to save us because of His great love for us and has provided a great and glorious future for us.
From eternity, God planned to bring Ruth and Boaz together, and thus make Bethlehem His entrance point for Jesus Christ to come as our true Kinsman-Redeemer, fully God and fully man.
Have you come to Jesus to be redeemed by Him from slavery to sin and eternal death?
