Philemon v4 – I always thank my God as I remember you in my prayers
Paul is writing this short letter to his dear friend Philemon, during his Roman imprisonment. Philemon was a slave owner, who also hosted a church in his home. Philemon had heard Paul’s preaching and become a Christian.
Onesimus was Philemon’s slave. He had robbed his master and run away to Rome and Paul. Through Paul’s witnessing Onesimus had become a Christian (v10). Now Paul is sending Onesimus, who is still the property of Philemon, back to him, asking Philemon to forgive and accept Onesimus, now as a brother in Christ.
One of the first things Paul has to say to Philemon is how grateful he is for him. Paul says that he always thanks God when he remembers Philemon in his prayers. Paul is grateful for Philemon because of his love for the believers and his faith in Christ Jesus. Philemon is evidently someone who reached out to those around him, to refresh them. The church in his home is a great example.
Philemon’s love for people comes from his faith in Christ Jesus. Our actions are a reflection of our thoughts and our heart attitude, Faith in Christ leads to love for His people, a burden to share the love of Christ with those around. As Christians who love and follow Christ, we cannot but have love for people.
Paul remembered Philemon with gratitude. How would people remember you and me? Would people be grateful for us? What is the motive for the things you do? Are there people who pray for you with thanksgiving? Who are you praying for with gratitude?
