There are moments when life reminds us how small we truly are. Standing before a vast ocean, receiving unexpected news, or realizing how little control we have can quiet us outwardly but stir noise inside—anxiety, fear, guilt, and wonder. Encounters with God’s greatness feel the same. They draw us close while revealing what’s beneath the surface, leaving us unsure how to respond.
Isaiah’s vision captures this well: “In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up… And one cried to another, ‘Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts’” (Isaiah 6:1–3, NKJV). Faced with God’s holiness, Isaiah doesn’t make excuses or hide; he confesses, “Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips” (v. 5). God’s greatness exposes the heart’s true condition.
Isaiah’s response is not panic but reverence—a deep awareness of God’s holiness that clarifies who we are and who God is. His brokenness meets God’s grace, preparing him for the calling ahead.
God’s holiness and love meet in Jesus, who bore our sin and opened the way to stand confidently in God’s presence. Reverent awe helps us face His greatness with peace, knowing His holiness is also mercy.
Pause and Ponder
- How does Isaiah’s response in Isaiah 6:1–5 challenge the way I view holiness and humility?
- What emotions rise in me when I truly encounter God’s greatness?
- How can my life gently point someone toward Jesus, so they too can meet God’s holiness with hope and openness?
When awe meets honesty, it leads to renewal, peace, and a heart ready to obey.

Lord Jesus, when I face Your greatness, quiet my inner noise and help me stand humbly in Your holy presence, trusting Your mercy and grace. Amen.
