8. In Humility, Jesus Emptied Himself

SERIES: 31 REASONS TO CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS

Philippians 2:6-8
who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.

We celebrate Christmas because we celebrate Jesus

  • the eternal God, who came down to the manger in Bethlehem
  • did not cling to his deity, but emptied Himself into a bondservant
  • who humbled Himself when He was born in an obscure place, into poverty, among a despised people
  • was born a child, submitting to obedience to earthly parents, learning and practicing a trade
  • who humbled Himself in choosing and submitting to the shame, agony, and public humiliation of His death on the cross

Lord Jesus, I cannot even begin to imagine what it must have taken for you to humble and empty yourself of all your glory.
And you did it all for me! Thank you Lord, thank you.
