Gracious Words (Job 27:1-12)                       HONESTY

As long as I have life within me, the breath of God in my nostrils, my lips will not say anything wicked, and my tongue will not utter lies. Job 27:3-4

Job was honest and spoke from his heart.

There were many negative features in Job’s response, but there were positive aspects too. Job loved truth and righteousness and desired to walk in them. At the beginning of the book of Job, God described Job as one who loved righteousness, feared God, and turned away from evil. And Job, in the above passage, reiterates that he would continue to hold on to his integrity and would not speak lies or what was wicked.

Honesty is good. But being honest does not mean expressing whatever comes to our mind, whenever we want, without restraint. People try to justify such behavior as ‘just being honest.’ But they are not. They are speaking out of a negative and critical spirit and have also failed to exercise restraint. Such behavior fails on both counts of self-control and honesty.

On the other hand, some think that being spiritual and positive is to say nice-sounding things that they don’t mean or believe in. But if the words do not come from the heart, we should not say them. God sees through our outward conduct. He knows our heart. And God hates hypocrisy. He desires truthfulness in us. When there are issues that disturb us, we need not pretend they do not exist. We can honestly acknowledge our thoughts, graciously to the Lord and to those around us.

Is there someone whom you need to seek forgiveness from, for hurting them with your ‘just honest’ words?

Lord help me come to you humbly and honestly with issues that disturb me, I pray.
