The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.” – Exodus 16:3
Memory is short lived. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE
The Israelites had been slaves in Egypt for more than four hundred years. In their misery, they cried to the Lord. God heard their cry. He called Moses to lead the Israelites out. With a great display of His power through ten plagues, God led His people out of Egypt. When the armies of Pharaoh pursued them, the Lord parted the waters. He took the entire two million people of Israel across, in just one night. The armies of Pharaoh that had pursued them perished in the waters of the Red Sea. The miracles that the Lord performed to deliver His people were amazing and mighty.
And yet, here they are, complaining already. Complaining about the lack of food. After all the amazing wonders the Lord had done, they were still doubting God’s goodness toward them. They had already forgotten God’s marvellous provision and protection. People’s memory is too short.
Complaining reflects that we have forgotten God and His goodness towards us. Complaining is always against God and not the person we are angry at. It displays a lack of trust in God’s goodness or confidence in God’s sovereignty. When we complain, we blame people around us, even those who have helped and done us well. A heart that trusts God is a grateful heart.
Take time to recall at least five ways God has blessed you in the past week.
