The Lord said to Moses, “Count all the firstborn Israelite males who are a month old or more and make a list of their names. Take the Levites for me in place of all the firstborn of the Israelites, and the livestock of the Levites in place of all the firstborn of the livestock of the Israelites. I am the Lord.”

Only the male members of one family, Aaron’s family, offered sacrifices. The rest of the Levites assisted the priests in their work and carried parts of the tabernacle when Israel travelled.
The census of the Levites is described in chapters three and four. This census was different from that of the other tribes. In the Levitical census, every male from age of one month and more was counted and not just those twenty and upwards, as in the other tribes. The reason for this goes back to the time of the Exodus when God claimed all the firstborn of the Israelites, including their cattle, as His own. Firstborn of the cattle were sacrificed. But since human firstborn could not be sacrificed, God claimed all male Levites as His own. And this showed that the whole nation belonged to the Lord.
In the church today, however, not just firstborn male but all believers are God’s purchased possession. And Apostle Peter reminds us in 1 Peter 1:18-19, that we are not redeemed with perishable things, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish. If you belong to Christ, you will make it the business of your life to serve him, as the Levites did.
Do you?
Lord, help me serve you with all my heart, I pray.
