For when the community rebelled at the waters in the Desert of Zin, both of you disobeyed my command to honor me as holy before their eyes.” (These were the waters of Meribah Kadesh, in the Desert of Zin.) Numbers 27:14
Moses led Israel for forty long years. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE
The Israelites had been in slavery in Egypt for four hundred years. They cried for help and the Lord sent them Moses. After forty years of preparation in the palace and yet another forty in the wilderness, God called Moses to lead His people out of bondage.
And Moses did faithfully lead the Israelites. Despite their grumbling, murmuring and rebelling, he led them, patiently. Even when they angered the Lord many times, Moses faithfully interceded on their behalf. And yet, in one moment of weakness, Moses faltered. And for that, he paid a heavy price.
The Israelites came to the desert of Zin and were thirsty. They grumbled against Moses and he cried out to the Lord. The Lord told him to speak to the rock and that water would come out. But Moses in his frustration struck the rock instead. Though water did gush out, Moses had made a grave mistake. Moses had taken his eyes off the Lord and somewhere taken the situation and glory for himself. Moses lost the privilege of going into the Promised Land.
When you and I take our eyes off the Lord and try to solve situations on our own, not relying on him, we are being proud. The Lord opposes the proud but shows favour to the humble (1 Peter 5:5).
For what do you need to depend on the Lord in humility?
Lord, forgive me for being proud, and may I never take the glory due to you, I pray.
