When the priests withdrew from the Holy Place, the cloud filled the temple of the Lord. And the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled his temple.

Solomon assembled the elders of Israel and all the heads of the tribes. This was to be a spectacular opening ceremony for the temple. And the priests brought the ark, the most important item, as God had commanded. And when the priests withdrew from the temple, the cloud filled the temple. This was the cloud of glory, seen often in the Old and New Testaments, sometimes called the cloud of Shekinah glory. It is hard to define the glory of God. It could be called the radiance of His character and presence which was manifested here in a cloud.
This is the cloud that stood by the Israelites in the wilderness and the door of the temple. It is also from which God met Moses and spoke to Israel. This is the cloud that was present at the transfiguration of Jesus (Luke 9:34-35) and the cloud of glory that received Jesus into heaven at His ascension (Acts 1:9). It is also the cloud that will display the glory of Christ when He returns triumphantly (Revelation 1:7).
God is good and loving but He is also holy. Isaiah, Peter, John, and others felt awed in the presence of God. They were stricken by the extent of the difference between their own sinfulness and the holiness of God.
What is your response to God’s holiness and your own sinfulness?
Lord, help me ever live aware of your holiness, I pray.
