Deserved Judgement (1 Kings 11:26-33) JUDGMENT

Then he said to Jeroboam, “Take ten pieces for yourself, for this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘See, I am going to tear the kingdom out of Solomon’s hand and give you ten tribes. – 1 Kings 11:31

Solomon had a rich heritage of faith from his father David. He had his personal experiences too. And yet Solomon went after other gods. God was displeased with Solomon’s embrace of idolatry. He ordained the division of Israel.

Solomon’s kingdom was an outstanding example of wealth, military power, and prestige. God had promised the entire kingdom of Israel to the descendants of David forever. The only requirement was that they remained obedient to Him. They could not remain faithful for even one generation.

God announces the division of the kingdom. A part of the kingdom would be faithful to the descendants of David and part of it will be under a different dynasty. Even in this great judgement, God mingled undeserved mercy with deserved judgement. For the sake of David, He even delayed this judgement until after Solomon’s generation.

Jeroboam and David were appointed by God to follow disobedient kings. David waited for the Lord to give him the throne, and God blessed his reign. Jeroboam did not wait for God but made his own way to the throne, and God did not bless his reign.

We sometimes think that great spiritual experiences will keep us from sin and will keep us faithful to God. That was not true for the wisest man who ever lived, and it will not be the case with us either.

Lord, keep me from allowing anything to take priority over you, I pray.
