The leaders of Israel and the king humbled themselves and said, “The Lord is just.” – 2 Chronicles 12:6

After Rehoboam’s position as king was established he and all Israel with him abandoned the law of the Lord (2 Chronicles 12:1). Rehoboam trusted God till the time that he felt he needed Him and abandoned God when he grew.  He led the people away from God and the entire kingdom into sin.

And so, the Lord gave them into the hands of Shishak, king of Egypt, who took the fortified cities of Judah and came to Jerusalem. This was a serious threat to the southern kingdom. Shemaiah the prophet met the leaders of Judah and reminded them that because they had abandoned God, He had now abandoned them to Shishak’ (v5). This was a correction that matched the offense.

If Judah insisted on forsaking God, they would find themselves forsaken in the day of their need. The danger of telling God “leave me alone” is that someday He may just answer that prayer.

But the leaders and the king, realize their mistake and humbly accept that the Lord is right. This national repentance was initiated by the leaders of the kingdom.

Great moving of the Spirit of God, in history, have been seen when leaders have passionately turned to God in repentance and humility. As leaders in different areas of life, be it as parents, or leaders at work or church, each of us are accountable for our spiritual walk.

How is your spiritual walk enabling others to turn to God?

LLord, may my walk with you encourage those watching, I pray.
