They taught throughout Judah, taking with them the Book of the Law of the Lord; they went around to all the towns of Judah and taught the people. – 2 Chronicles 17:9

Jehoshaphat, the son of Asa, came to the throne of Judah. He recognized that the northern kingdom was a danger to Judah militarily, politically, and spiritually. And so, he strengthened his defences against this threat.

The Lord was with Jehoshaphat because he followed the ways of his father David before him (v3). Now David was Jehoshaphat’s ancestor, not his father. Asa, his father, though a good king did not finish well. And yet Jehoshaphat chose to do right in the sight of the Lord.

There are some who use the excuse of unbelieving parents for one’s own spiritual failure. But the fact is today, unlike the days of Jehoshaphat, we have the Bible and many godly examples to follow. We have no excuse.

By the third year of his reign, Jehoshaphat had the Levites brought in. They were assigned the task of teaching God’s law throughout the towns of Judah. This was the wisest policy the security-conscious king of Judah could adopt. Teaching God’s law not only equipped the people spiritually but also sent out the message to the surrounding nations that Jehoshaphat’s power was much more than the physical army. Though Jehoshaphat had strengthened his military defense, it was when he established a preaching ministry in all the cities, that his enemies were afraid and made no war.

Are you arming yourself for life’s battles with God’s word?

Lord, help strengthen myself in you and your Word, I pray.
