Complacent Woe (Amos 6:1-7) SIN

Woe to you who are complacent in Zion, and to you who feel secure on Mount Samaria, you notable men of the foremost nation, to whom the people of Israel come! – Amos 6:1

Israel’s sin was complacency. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE

To be complacent is to have a feeling of contentment or self-satisfaction, often combined with a lack of awareness of pending trouble or controversy.

The prophet Amos saw in the people of Israel a complacency or a sinful rest. A rest of indifference, laziness, and self-indulgence. A confidence of one who is based on the sandy foundations of self and man. Not a confidence on the rock-solid foundation of God. A confidence of the man who thinks he could hide his sin from God.

Israel’s complacency was seen in the fact that they counted on and felt secure in Samaria. They were not quick to act, they procrastinated. They put off the day of disaster (v3) they didn’t take it seriously. They were self-indulgent. They were so caught up in enjoying themselves they didn’t pause to grieve over the ruin around them. They were willfully ignorant in their revelry, they didn’t seem to care less (v4-6).

The idea of rest is not bad. Jesus calls to rest (Matthew 11:28-29). There is a promised rest for the people of God (Hebrews 4:9-11). But complacency is wrong. “Self-indulgence! Oh, this is the god of many! They live not for Christ – What do they do for Him? They live not for His Church – What care they for that? They live for self, and for self only. And mark there are such among the poor as well as among the rich, for all classes have this evil leaven.” (Spurgeon)

How is complacency seen in your life?

Lord, help me take action and repent about the sin in my life, I pray.
