This is what the Lord says to me: “I will remain quiet and will look on from my dwelling place, like shimmering heat in the sunshine, like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest.” – Isaiah 18:4
Wherever Judah looked there was doom. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE
The threat of Assyria loomed large. Damascus to the north, Philistia to the west, Moab to the east, Cush to the south, all the nations are faced with doom. Envoys from ‘the land of whirring wings’ come. These good-looking messengers from Cush, have come in papyrus boats to Judah presumably to offer to support them against Assyria.
The situation was gloomy, and Judah felt helpless. Sadly, they were looking to alliances for help rather than to God. But Isaiah sends the messengers from Cush back. He explains that the Lord quietly observes from His dwelling place on high. And when the time is right, He will do away with Assyria like a farmer prunes spreading branches (v5). And at that time, the people of Cush would join with all the peoples of the world in bringing gifts of praise to the Lord to Mount Zion (v7).
There is a lot to be concerned about in today’s world. We often look at the instability in the world with concern and look for solutions around us.
But God is sovereign. He sure is watching and is in absolute control. Rather than look around, we are to look up to the Lord for His grace and love. He is our strength and our tower of refuge. God sometimes removes our false security so that we would trust Him.
Is your trust and security in peoples and powers or in the Lord?
Lord, help me trust you rather than looking at people for my security, I pray.
