I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the Lord. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me with all their heart. – Jeremiah 24:7
Judgement came and was still to come on Judah.| WATCH ON YOUTUBE
The entire nation of Judah was to be exiled to Babylon. And when judgment came on a nation or community, it means that all suffer, even those who may be innocent of the sins that brought God’s judgment. And yet, that did not mean that everyone in Judah was the same in God’s eyes.
What God said to Jeremiah through the two baskets of figs means that even when all suffer, God still knows the difference between those caught up in the judgment and those who brought down the judgment.
Some like the good figs were sent out of Judah to Babylon for their own good. And Jeremiah’s message was that those first taken in exile to Babylon were the good figs, not the bad. They would be blessed even in captivity. God also promised to bring them back to this land. And when they returned to the land, God would establish them securely again (v5-6).
And then the Lord promised that He would give them a new heart to know Him, to know that He is the Lord. The great change after the exile was that Israel no longer went after the idols of the nations. They were separated and devoted to Yahweh in a way they had not been before.
How does this promise that God gave Israel, encourage and strengthen you today?
Thank You, Lord, that you are a God of restoration and healing, even today.
