He set fire to the temple of the Lord, the royal palace and all the houses of Jerusalem. Every important building, he burned down. – 2 Kings 25:9
Solomon’s great temple was now a ruin.| WATCH ON YOUTUBE
The beautiful temple that was built almost four hundred years back, was destroyed by the Babylonians, in the eleventh year of Zedekiah. And it would stay a ruin for many years until it was humbly rebuilt by the returning exiles in the days of Ezra.
History records that when the Babylonians entered the temple, they held a two-day feast there to desecrate it; then, on the third day, they set fire to the building. Nebuzaradan the commander, also carried away the valuable things from the temple.
Nebuzaradan methodically demolished the beautiful city, the palace and important buildings. He broke down the walls of Jerusalem, destroying the physical safety and security of the city. The walls would remain a ruin until they were rebuilt by the returning exiles in the days of Nehemiah.
He also carried the people to Babylon who remained in exile. He left behind some of the poorest people of the land to work the vineyards.
Jerusalem was left desolate, completely plundered under the judgment of the Lord. The Lord had given His people this land and they possessed it for more than eight hundred years. A land that was taken by faith and obedience, was lost through idolatry and sin.
God is loving and gracious. He is a God of not just second chances, but multiple chances. But His judgment is real too and will surely come.
Would you choose to turn to Him now, before it is too late?
Lord, may I use every opportunity to draw closer to you, I pray.
