Turn to God (Joel 2:1-27) RESTORATION

I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten – the great locust and the young locust, the other locusts and the locust swarm – my great army that I sent among you. – Joel 2:25

Joel means ‘Jehovah is God.’ Joel prophesied during a time of great turmoil and transition, to the southern kingdom of Judah, without reference to the northern kingdom of Israel.

In chapter one, Joel speaks of the judgement that had arrived in Judah through a plague of locusts and drought. In chapter two, he begins describing the judgement that will come. A large and mighty army is set against Judah. But Joel continues with the hope of the restoration of the Lord, if Judah is willing to repent.

The people who hear the warning of the Lord are called to repent. True repentance is to turn to God and turn away from sin. They are to repent with all their hearts. They are to repent with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning. Repentance is to be genuine, not a show. They are to rend their hearts, not their garments.

And if there is true repentance, God promised to restore what was taken away in chastisement. God promises to restore what the locusts had eaten away. Locusts ate the fruit of the years of labour, not the years themselves. Time lost cannot be restored, but God promises to restore the fruit of the years lost.

God is still in the business of restoring lives and hearts of those who truly repent. Have you truly repented, turned to God and away from sin?

Lord, that I may truly turn to you with all my heart, I pray.
