Published on Sep 29, 2025

At the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem, the Levites were sought out from where they lived and were brought to Jerusalem to joyfully celebrate the dedication with songs of thanksgiving and with the music of cymbals, harps, and lyres. – Nehemiah 12:27

The walls were rebuilt. A difficult task was completed in record time, against many odds and much opposition. The city of Jerusalem now needed to be re-populated. So, the leaders of the people settled in Jerusalem. The rest of the people cast lots to bring one out of every ten of them to live in Jerusalem, the holy city, while the remaining nine were to stay in their own towns. Those who volunteered to live in Jerusalem were commended by the people (11:1-2).

Now that every detail had been taken care of and there was more than enough reason to celebrate, it was time to say thank you. Thank you to the Lord for helping them complete this task. Celebration to the Lord because they knew well that, without the Lord, it would have been impossible to complete.

The celebration was to the Lord and with God’s people. The Levites were sought and brought to lead the celebration. The celebration was with musical instruments and songs of thanksgiving.

We have many reasons to celebrate. Birthdays, weddings, are just a few. The times that we experience God’s goodness and mercies are numerous each day. How often do we stop to say thank you to the Lord, acknowledging His goodness and faithfulness?

How do your celebrations point to the Lord and His goodness?

Lord, increase in me the attitude of gratitude and may all my celebrations point to you, I pray.
