“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” – Luke 16:13

Jesus was referring to the slave and master relationship. A slave cannot belong to two masters. A master possessed a slave exclusively. A slave is different from a servant or workman. A workman can have more than one job but a slave has only one master. 

Jesus was talking about the heart condition. Many say they love God, but their lives and priorities show otherwise. Serving God can never be a part-time job. Once you choose Christ as your Saviour, every moment of your time and all that you are and own, belong to Him alone. God is the most exclusive of masters. We either belong to Him totally or not at all. 

If you think you are successfully serving two masters, you are deceiving yourself. One can have both money and God, but one cannot serve both money and God. 

You cannot call yourself a child of God and steal stationery or worktime from your job. You cannot sing and praise God on Sundays at worship, and then use your mouth for bad language, angry words, lies, gossip and slander during the week. If Christ is truly Lord of your life, you cannot allow your hearts and minds to be filled with dirty thoughts and images. As a child of God, you cannot abuse your body, which is the temple of God, with substances that are harmful. 

Who is truly the master of your life?

Forgive me and help me be ever faithful to you alone, my Master, I pray.
