Are You Ready? (Matthew 25:1-13) SECOND COMING

The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. – Matthew 25:5

Jesus tells the parable of the ten virgins to illustrate the second coming of Christ. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE

A wedding in first century Judea was one of the greatest celebrations in village life. Ten young women, who apparently knew the bridegroom, alike in so many ways, were invited to the wedding feast.

Each of the ten young women took her lamp to go out and meet the bridegroom. But there was a delay and one by one each of them falls asleep. Only at the midnight cry, ‘here’s the bridegroom’ did the difference between the two sets of virgins become evident.

Five of them were prepared for the bridegroom, while the other five were not. The wise virgins were ready with their lamps filled with oil, trimmed and burning bright. The foolish virgins soon realized that they lacked what they needed, to enter into the celebration. They didn’t have oil.

In this parable, the ten virgins were those who claimed to follow Jesus. The oil represents the Holy Spirit. The wise virgins with their oil are the ones who have accepted Christ as Saviour and are ready to meet Him.  The foolish virgins represent those yet to decide, probably in their overconfidence, thinking they still have time to choose Christ.

But the truth is, the time of the Lord’s return is near, though we do not know when. Jesus wants every person to believe in Him. To trust Him means a relationship with Him today and readiness to meet Him with joy when He returns.

Are you ready to meet the Savior?

Lord, help me choose you as Savior and be ready to meet you, I pray.
