A good part of the four gospels is taken up with the events surrounding Christ’s crucifixion. The cross was the entire focus and direction of Christ’s life on earth. Christ’s death on the cross was the atonement for the sin of humankind. The word ‘atone’ comes from two words ‘at one.’ By dying on the cross for the sins of the world, Jesus Christ made it possible for all humanity to be made ‘at one’ with God.

The crucifixion of Christ (Matthew 27:32-56) is an eyewitness account. It was a very public death, watched by the soldiers (v36), visible to the passers-by (v39), to the religious hierarchy (v41) and witnessed by the centurion and many women (v54-55). Now on Christ’s death, the curtain in the temple was torn from top to bottom (v51), putting an end, once and for all, the separation between God and man. Nature shuddered, at His death (v52-53).

The cross is the guarantee that God has set His eternal love upon His people. Human sin created a barrier of guilt between man and his Creator. However, by willingly accepting responsibility for this sin and dying on the cross, Jesus Christ took on the penalty for this sin. The power of Satan’s kingdom was broken and the believer set free.

This earth-shattering, life-giving and atoning death of Christ should cause us to be filled with awe at this amazing Saviour and to worship Him. It should give us the confidence to draw near to this God with a sincere heart (Hebrews 19:22).

What is your response?

Lord, I worship you for your amazing love and sacrifice for me.
