But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” – Acts 7:55-56
As the early church grew, its needs grew too. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE
Stephen was one of the seven chosen to serve in the daily distribution of food. The Bible describes him as a man full of God’s grace and power (6:8). He performed great wonders and signs among the people.
But Stephen was accused of speaking blasphemous words against Moses and God, the temple and the law (6:11-14). Some Jews stirred up an opposition and brought him before the Sanhedrin. The high priest invited Stephen to explain himself in light of the accusations. In his response, Stephen gave a beautiful panorama of Old Testament history. Stephen didn’t try to defend himself. He simply proclaimed the truth about Jesus in a way people could understand and emphasized things in Jewish history they may not have considered.
And at the end of his response, Stephen saw heaven open and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. It is significant to note Jesus is standing here, as opposed to the more common description of Him sitting in heaven at the right hand of the Father, almost as if giving him a standing ovation.
Stephen made history and was unique among believers. He was the first ever martyr of the church. Jesus stood in solidarity with Stephen at his moment of crisis. What a gracious Saviour who is not impassionate to the troubles of His children.
Is this Savior yours too?
Lord, give me the courage to accept you and proclaim you without fear, I pray.
